"Is de gruwel van Houla een Sarajevo-moment? Wanneer komt er een internationale reactie?" - Rudi Vranckx - via Twitter
~ Syria. I have been waiting for a while now, making up my mind whether to post something about it or not, the more so as I'm not an expert in the Middle-East dossier and debating about it demands profound knowledge. Moreover, the topic has its sensitivity. But for God's sake, why do I commence a blog if I'm not able to tell what's on my mind on a topic like this. I read about it in my newspaper every single day and now I really feel like my head is about to explode.
Especially since the attacks of the Syrian army in Houla past week something inside of me cracked. Mainly because I, just like a whole lot of others, feel like we have been sending too semi-kind messages to Bashar al-Assad for too long now. Indeed, without diplomacy foreign policies cannot be guided in a proper manner, but that we only decided this week to put a hold on the diplomatic relationships with Syria really is a very tragic 'too little, too late'. Strange, isn't it, that 'some' countries couldn't wait to intervene in let's say Iraq, where in fact they had to séarch for reasons to interfere, and now the number of casualties is increasing by the minute they are pushing the brake as hard as they possibly can. Of course, you and I know what that's all about. Nevertheless, with the resistance of both China and Russia the West - that moreover doesn't really find itself in best economic papers right now - is not really keen on a military intervention. But wasn't Guy Verhofstadt (Belgian politician - active Member of the European Parliament) right with immediately condemning the Annan-solution for being not sufficient?
Because damn, what about those citizens? Ever since the attacks on Houla, who are for the matter still proceeding, it is painfully clear that the Syrian army does not avoid atrocities and even sends defenseless children to the mass graves. I don't have made-to-measure solutions and probably those aren't even existing nor in the making. But just sitting here with eye pads on, worrying about which shoes look best on today's outfit, is just not working for me now. No one stays indifferent while facing these images, right?
