D-day update

D-day: algemene stakingsdag. Al blijkt ze niet zo algemeen te zijn want het is vooral in bepaalde sectoren dat ze wordt opgevolgd en bovendien lijkt er onder de bevolking geen consensus te bestaan over het nut van de staking - al is dat wel nooit het geval.


Wel natuurlijk haast geen trein die uitrijdt, al was je met de eerste sneeuw wellicht sowieso te laat gekomen op je werk of je examen. Sneeuw is namelijk nooit de beste vriend van de bovenleidingen van de nmbs geweest.


Heerlijk moment wel om te cocoonen - of in mijn geval eens aan mijn thesis beginnen werken. Al was er hier gisteren genoeg ruimte voor ontspanning: een bezoekje aan de cinema. De keuze voor 'The girl with the dragon tattoo' bleek de juiste, wat een topfilm.


~ D-day: general strike. Though the strike doesn't seem to be as general as the unions hoped: they are mainly followed up in a few specific sectors and you can't really speak of convincing consensus among the Belgian population. But is that ever the case? 


Of course you can be sure that almost no train will leave the station. Which would also be the case without the strike since the Belgian railways are not quite keen on snow and that's what it has been doing for hours now. 


But this weather and the limited movement possibilities are perfect for sleeping in and cocooning - or start working on my thesis like I should be doing. Though yesterday evening enough time to relax: a visit to the movies. Our choice for 'The girl with the dragon tattoo' definitely the right one, what a great movie. 

Mijn outfit bleek wel wat te opgeknoopt voor de doorsnee Hasseltse cinema-ganger - al kunnen het natuurlijk ook blikken van approval geweest zijn. Who cares anyway! 

~ My outfit though was probably a bit too neat for the average cinema visitor - but let's just assume it were looks of approval. Who cares anyway! 

En nog even een nagel-update: na 11 dagen nog steeds mooi blinkende exemplaren. Wel al wat uitgroei, maar dat valt nog goed mee. 
~ A nail-update: after 11 days they are still nice and shiny. Of course a little bit of outgrowth, but it's not that bad at all. 

New look - winner or bummer?

Zoals jullie wellicht gemerkt hebben ben ik mijn blog van een nieuw jasje aan het voorzien. Ik had om wat tips & tricks gevraagd bij ervaren Belgische bloggers en hun oordeel was dat een meer 'cleane' look het geheel wat overzichtelijker zou maken.


Zo gezegd, zo gedaan. Al blijkt het ontwikkelen van een sobere look, oh ironie, meer tijd te vergen dan verhoopt... De eerste 'nieuwe' look was heel wat overzichtelijker, maar ook wat saai. Vandaar dat ik mijn basic photoshop-skills heb bovengehaald en een afbeelding in de header heb gestoken.


Missen jullie de blaadjes op de achtergrond of vinden jullie het leuker zo? Stemmen kan nog 7 dagen in de poll in de rechterzijbalk. Jullie mening is me dierbaar!


~ As you've probably noticed, I'm re-customizing my blog. I asked for some tips and tricks from more experienced Belgian bloggers and they judged that my blog would be better of with a more clean look to it. 


Their wish, my command. Ironically, it seems to be quite more tricky to design a sober look yourself than using a standard background picture. The first 'new' look I created was immediately more usable, but also a bit dull. That's why I used my basic photoshop-skills in putting a picture in the header.

What does spring/summer 2012 has to offer?

Fashion only vandaag: ik heb gisteren mijn laatste examen afgelegd en dan staat mijn namiddag in het teken van 'lamzakkerij' - sta me dus toe om de politiek even links te laten liggen. Zo heb ik gisteren zeer chill lopen rondkuieren in Hasselt cité met het vriendje aan mijn zijde en mijn ogen scherp gericht op de nieuwe collecties. 

~ Fashion only today: I finished my last exam yesterday morning, which means I chilled big time in the afternoon - so please allow me to not talk politics today. I walked along the shopping streets in Hasselt city with my boyfriend at my side and my eyes pinned on the new collections.  

Door in januari zelfs niet één dag gewerkt te hebben, zit ik serieus door mijn budget heen - dan maar windowshoppen... en mijn lieve bloglezers op de hoogte brengen van de nieuwe collecties die terug wat keurige orde brengen na de solden-ravage. 

~ Since I didn't work a single day in January, I can literally see the bottom of my wallet - so windowshopping it is... and of course make sure that my lovely blogreaders are aware of what they can find in stores right now. 

Onverwacht bracht ik gisteren nog eens een bezoekje aan Mango. Vroeger mijn absolute 'have to go' tijdens het winkelen, maar de afgelopen twee jaren stelde de collecties me wat teleur. Bovendien zijn de prijzen er nog harder gestegen dan bij Zara. Maar ik werd aangenaam verrast: er kwam een kleurrijke collectie op me af met meteen enkele stuks waar ik mijn wardrobe met plezier mee uitbreid. 

Ook nog even vermelden dat het meisje met de bruine carré dat er werkt NIET mijn zus is: ik zie de gelijkenis zelf niet erg fel, maar de rest van de wereld dus wel. De dames van Sweet Coffee vroegen me dat gisteren ook. Een leuke anekdote wel: ze was er een koffietje gaan drinken en haar paraplu vergeten. Waarop Nathalie en Julie replikeerden: dat is niet erg, we denken dat we haar zus kennen. So funny! 

~ I paid an unexpected visit to Mango yesterday. It used to be my absolute 'have to go' during my shopping trips, but it has let me down a bit the last couple of years. Moreover, their prices have increased immensely. But the spring/summer collection 2012 is a nice one: a colorful set of clothes, shoes and accessories. I immediately found a few pieces which would definitely be an asset to my wardrobe.

I would also like to add that the girl with the brown mid-length hair that is working @ Mango Hasselt is NOT my sister. I don't see the dissemblance myself that much, but the rest of the world does. Just like the ladies from Sweet Coffee yesterday: a lovely anecdote actually. The girl went for a coffee there few days ago and forgot her umbrella. Whereupon Nathalie and Julie replied: don't worry, we think we know her sister. So funny!

Een vaste stop is - uiteraard - Zara. Hier slechts twee kleine hoekjes met nieuwe collectie te bespeuren en nog heel veel solden. Wie nog geen tijd heeft gehad voor een solden-hunt moet hier zeker eens passeren. Maar wat die nieuwe collectie betreft dus: ik werd meteen verliefd op 2 pastel-groene blouses. Al vind ik eentje wel vrij duur (€ 79) - voor die prijs ga ik ook met de groene blazer of de ZALIGE platforms naar huis, keuze snel gemaakt denk ik. Ik kan alleen maar hopen dat deze 'wanna haves' er nog zijn tegen de tijd dat mijn rekening is aangevuld...

~ A fixed stop is - of course - at Zara's. I only spotted two little corners reserved for the new collection. Which means: still a lot of sales to be found. But concerning the new collection: I absolutely l.o.v.e the two pastel-green blouses. If only one of them was not that expensive... (€ 79) - for the same price I also found a green blazer and LOVELY platform shoes. I can only hope that these wanna haves are still in stores at the time my bank account is refilled.

Een laatste stop maak ik aan het einde van de Demerstraat bij Clinic - één van Ali's favorieten. Wat de damescollectie betreft loop ik nooit echt hoog op met Clinic, dan prefereer ik Goldie in dezelfde prijscategorie. Maar Clinic heeft sinds enkele seizoenen de collectie van Ted Baker in huis (net als Goldie overigens) en er hingen enkele juweeltjes tussen. De prijzen vond ik terug op de Ted Baker website - of clinic dezelfde prijzen hanteert ben ik niet zeker. 

~ A last stop is at the end of the Demerstraat at Clinic's - one of Ali's favorites. When it comes to the women's collections I'm never really that overblown. I think Goldie offers a way more beautiful ladies collection in this price range. But since a couple of seasons, Clinic sells Ted Baker (as Goldie does) and I really saw some lovely pieces. I found the prices at the official Ted Baker website so I'm not really sure Clinic's using these prices.

Feeling BLUE

 

(In Nederland dezelfde verzuchting)

Feeling blue - om verschillende redenen. Laten we voor de lieve vrede starten met het politieke luik (men zou me ervan gaan beschuldigen dat mijn pagina zijn naam niet waardig is) en daar staat blauw vandaag voor 'kou'. Vanaf zondag gaat het beginnen vriezen 's nachts, het wordt nu blijkbaar echt winter. Wij kunnen er dan voor kiezen om lekker binnen te cocoonen en als je dan toch buiten moet zijn warm je je erna lekker op in een koffiezaak of tegen het verwarmingselement. 
~ Feeling blue - for different kinds of reasons. Let's start with politics this time (I wouldn't want to be accused of being too fashion-minded) and here blue stands for the cold nights that are ahead of us. We, lucky ones, can spend these nights at our cozy homes. 


Zolang het niet vriest zouden we ze haast vergeten, maar België telt nog steeds een horde aan asielzoekers waarvoor er niets anders op zit dan de nacht op straat door te brengen. De afgelopen weken is Maggie De Block als persoon meer kop van jut geweest, maar ik kan je verzekeren dat het beleid dat de afgelopen jaren in dit land gevoerd is verder gaat dan 'ons Maggie'. 
~ But as long as it is not freezing, we would almost forget about the thousands of asylum-seekers Belgium counts who have no other option than to spend the night on the streets. The last couple of weeks there was more to tell about Maggie de Block as a human being, but I can reassure you that the policy this country has been carrying out goes far beyond 'Maggie'. 


In tweede bachelor stoomde ik de Vlaamse politieke partijen af om te polsen naar hun visie met betrekking tot het Belgische asielbeleid. Verbazingwekkend kwam ik tot de vaststelling dat de partijen het blijkbaar zo goed als eens waren over het te voeren beleid (outliers even buiten beschouwing gelaten...) Natuurlijk stootte ik wel op enkele accentverschillen, maar van Groen tot N-VA luidde een oproep tot verandering in 'strengere' zin, daarom niet minder humane zin. 
~ In my second year at University I went to several Flemish political parties to ask them about their vision on the Belgian Asylum-policy. I was astonished that there was kind of a consensus between these parties about the policy to be made. Of course there were a few differences concerning accents, but from Groen (the Flemish green party) to N-VA (Flemish nationalist party) there was a call for a 'more strict' policy - therefor not less human.


Je kan je namelijk afvragen of het wel eerlijk is om mensen te weigeren, hebben de grenzen wel betekenis, is de wereld niet van iedereen? Dat zijn zeer mooie en nobele gedachten, maar tegelijk zijn ze ook naïef, want je moet natuurlijk ook de capaciteit hebben om iedereen een plaats aan te bieden. 
~ One can wonder: is it fair to refuse people, do boundaries really have a meaning, isn't the world made for everyone on it? Of course these are very beautiful and noble thoughts, but also quite naive, a country also needs the capacity to house them. 


Wat mij dus evident lijkt is dat mensen die het écht nodig hebben, die duizenden kilometers gereisd hebben omdat ze in hun land van herkomst de dood in de ogen keken (politieke vluchtelingen beschermd door de conventie van Genève), een kans op een vrij leven geboden wordt. Andere categorieën van vreemdelingen, de zogenaamde 'economische vluchtelingen', kunnen we nu eenmaal niet allemaal een plaats aanbieden. Ik zou niet durven beweren dat hun situatie, relatief gezien, niet minder penibel is maar ik denk dat het aan deze landen zelf is om het tij voor hun inwoners te keren. 
~ As far as I'm concerned, I think it's logic that we should help those people who really need help, who have traveled for thousands of miles because at their homeland they could have already been dead (politic refugees under the convention of Genève). It is not an option to also house every 'economic refugee', they should be able to rely on the intentions of their own country. 


Ik wijd komend semester ook elk brokje spare time aan dit thema, aangezien dit het onderwerp zal uitmaken van mijn meesterproef. Meer bepaald werp ik een blik op de opvangketen (asielcentra, noodopvangcentra, transitcentra) en specifiek de plaats van de lokale besturen in deze keten - de Belgische OCMW's zorgen namelijk voor het leeuwendeel van de opvang in Lokale Opvanginitiatieven. 
~ Every little spot of spare time this semester, will also be going to this theme, since it's the core subject of my Master Thesis. More specifically I will do research about the shelter of these asylum-seekers at federal and local level. 


Ben je geïnteresseerd in de resultaten van mijn (bescheiden) onderzoek? Dan bezorg ik je aan het einde van de rit zeker een kopie van mijn bevindingen. 
~ Are you interested in the results of this humble research? Then I will happily deliver a copy at the the end. 


EN dan nu, wat fashion betreft. 'Feeling blue' heeft ook zeker een mode-betekenis in mijn geval, ik ben al jaar en dag fan van blauw. Van hevig tot zacht, van donker tot licht. En waarmee ik blauw deze winter het liefst combineer is grijs of zilver (dat merkten jullie al bij mijn nieuwjaarsoutfit). 
~ AND for now: fashion. 'Feeling blue' definitely also has a fashion-meaning since it's my favorite color of all times. This winter I'm combining it with tones of grey and silver (which you have probably noticed at my pictures of New Year's Eve).

Vrijdag mijn volgende en tevens laatste examen: Politieke Communicatie. En gezien de communicatieve blunders van de afgelopen maanden - Philippe Muyters als prins en Maggie De Block als prinses - heb ik genoeg voorbeeldstof om op het examen te misbruiken. 
~ I'm preparing for my next and at the same time final exam this friday: Political communication. And giving the communicative missteps the last couple of months of Belgian's finest I have enough real life examples at my disposal. 


Vandaag dus geen uitgebreid blogbericht, maar opnieuw een warme oproep. De weg naar 200 facebook-fans blijkt wat hobbeliger te zijn, maar zeker niet onhaalbaar met jullie netwerk-skills. Bij deze kan ik al bevestigen dat jullie ook bij het bereiken van de volgende mijlpaal kans maken op een goodiebag, wat de precieze inhoud zal zijn kan ik nog niet verklappen, maar ik kan jullie verzekeren dat het weer een absolute 'wanna have' wordt. Meet: SWEET COFFEE @ Hasselt

Inmiddels het derde plekje in Hasselt waar ik jullie graag mee naartoe neem: Sweet Coffee. Een übergezellige koffiebar in het centrum van de stad. 
~ Yet another spot in Hasselt where I'm taking you to: Sweet Coffee. A incredibly nice looking coffee-bar in the centre of the city.


Het is nog maar enkele maanden geleden dat de zusjes Julie en Nathalie hun droom vervulden met het openen van hun eigen, gezellige zaak. De eerste reden om Sweet Coffee een bezoekje te brengen is uiteraard... de koffie. En die komt er in alle maten en geuren: de kaart is volgestouwd met verrassende latte's, cappuccino's, hot chocolate's en thee's. Voor wanneer het weer wat warmer wordt kan je er op het terrasje genieten van een ijskoffie of huisbereide ice tea. 
~ It's only been a couple of months that sisters Julie and Nathalie made their dream come true by opening their own, lovely business. The first reason to visit Sweet Coffee is of course... the coffee. En there are a whole lot of them: surprising lattes, cappuccinos, hot chocolates and thees. And when the temperatures get a little higher you can enjoy an ice-coffee or homemade ice tea on the little terrace. 


En natuurlijk zijn die drankjes het lekkerst vergezeld van een zelfgebakken muffin, gateau of petit beurre taartje. Lunchen kan er ook: mijn ábsolute favoriet is de baguette met mozarella, zongedroogde tomaatjes, pesto, rucola en balsamico-dressing. 
~ It speaks for itself that these drinks taste even better combined with a homemade muffin, cake or petit beurre pie. You're also able to have lunch: my absolute favorite is the baguette with mozarella cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, pesto, rucola and a balsamico-dressing.


Voor wie bij dit lijstje zich al instant voelt verdikken: de Latte's en Cappuccino's kunnen ook in een 'skinny' versie bereid worden, of met sojamelk. Bovendien, een good old traditionele koffie vind je er ook en daar heeft  je lijn niets op tegen! 
~ For those who are worried about the size of their bellies: the lattes and cappuccinos can also be delivered in a 'skinny' version or based on soy milk. Moreover, they also serve a good old traditional coffee: your figure won't veto that. 


Het verhaaltje is nog niet uit want ten slotte kan je bij Sweet Coffee ook terecht voor een gezellig ontbijt, basic of met alles erop en eraan. 
~ And the story's not over yet. You can also have breakfast at Sweet Coffee, basic or with everything included.


Ik ga er vooral graag naartoe om even te relaxen. De belichting is rustgevend, de stoelen zitten aangenaam, de meisjes bedienen hun klanten één voor één met veel zorg en er staat geen uitbundige radio op de achtergrond maar loungy jazz-geluiden. 
~ It really is a place to sit back and relax. The lighting is restful, the chairs are comfortable, the girls serve each and every client with a lot of care and you won't find a noisy radio but loungy jazz-sounds in the background.

Belgium on a strike - again

Maandag 30 januari is het weer zover: een aangekondigde nationale stakingsdag. De verzuchting bij het merendeel van mijn generatie is groot. Het is ons, of alleszins mezelf en mijn directe omgeving, met de paplepel ingegeven dat 'het er allemaal niet beter op zou worden'. Twintigers die sparen voor 'later', enkele decennia geleden hadden ze je voor gek verklaard. 


Monday January 30th Belgium will - again - be experiencing a national strike. A lot of the youngsters of my generation don't get it. We are already aware a very long time that 'it would not be getting any better'. People in their twenties saving for their old day, only a few decades ago people would have thought you went nuts.


We leggen ons zeker niet zomaar neer bij ons lot, maar de zin voor realiteit lijkt wel groter te zijn dan bij vele van onze 'wijze' ouderen. Ik zou niet durven beweren dat de geschiedenis énkel cyclisch is, dat opleving en recessie mekaar blijven opvolgen, vooruitgang is mogelijk maar heeft zeker een plafond. Dat plafond, en zeker dat van het sociaal zekerheidsstelsel, is al een hele tijd geleden bereikt. 


I'm not saying we're just undergoing the changes without any objections, but our sense of reality seems to be bigger than that of many 'more wise' elderly. I wouldn't dare claiming history is purely cyclic, that revival and recession are constantly following one and other, progress is definitely possible but it has a limit. And that limit, and especially that of the Belgian social security system, has been reached a long time ago.


Natuurlijk kan je er niet om heen dat de zwaksten van de samenleving, in termen van inkomen, een hap uit hun budget sneller zullen voelen. Dat neemt niet weg dat (bijna) iedereen zal moeten inleveren, ongeacht of je er excessen of noodzakelijkheden voor moet opgeven. 


Of course you can't deny that the society's most weak inhabitants, in terms of income, will be aware a lot more of a cut in their budget. That said, (almost) everyone will have to give in, whether it is on excesses or on necessities.


Toch doe ik warme oproep om zeker niet in te leveren op die kleine dingen waar je zo van houdt. Ik ben van het principe dat geld wat moet rollen, je mag er niet te zeer over nadenken, al is het wel handig om een limiet in je achterhoofd te houden. Maar als je dan toch dat mooie paar schoenen ziet staan, hét concert van het jaar niet wilt missen of je niet kan kiezen tussen drie boeken bij de fnac: mits je er geen schulden mee maakt, doe gewoon! 


Yet I'm a firm believer that money has to be spend with a little flow to it and you should not be stopped by the recession in doing things you like most. If you really want to have that nice pair of shoes, wouldn't want to miss that concert, or you couldn't choose between three really interesting books at the bookstore: as long as you're not making any depts, just go for it! 


Mijn besparingstip bij uitstek is op mijn ontbijt en lunch. In plaats van een croissant en koffie uit te halen onderweg naar je werk of les en 's middags te passeren bij de broodjesbar, koop een lekker brood en schaf je een brooddoos aan. Veel beter voor de lijn en je bespaart er elke week tientallen euro's mee. Als je echt kan genieten 's avonds lekker uit te gaan eten, moet je daar zeker niet op inleveren. Al vind ik één keer per week meer dan voldoende. 


My tip to save some money is by cutting back at breakfast and lunch. In stead of taking out a croissant and coffee every morning en eating out every lunch, just buy yourself a good bread and a trendy lunch box. It's way better for your body (weight-wise) and it saves you at least ten euros a week. If you really like to enjoy eating out for dinner, don't give in on that moment of relaxation. Though, once a week is doing it for me.

~ I think this link is not really concerning my English readers: some Belgian youngsters have made a facebook group so that every student who has to attend an exam Monday January 30th will get there without having trouble. The social media are again proving their usefulness!

It girls wear Essentiel Antwerp

Dat CANVAS zich interesseert in design en mode is al vaker gebleken, al wordt het wel mooi afgebakend van het politieke en 'belangrijkere' nieuws. Niet onterecht, als we onze Belgische politici moeten beoordelen op hun dresscode is het einde van de tunnel niet in zicht. Deze week kwam Panorama verrassend uit de hoek met een reportage over de zogenaamde 'it-girls'.

CANVAS (a Belgian tv channel) is known to be interested in fashion and design, but they like to keep it neatly separated from the more 'important' news facts. Not entirely untrue, if we would keep ourselves busy with scoring the Belgian politicians on their sense of fashion, we would be full of critiques almost all the time. This week Panorama (one of Canvas' programs) reported on the existence of the so called 'it girls'. Meer en meer Belgische 'it-girls' zijn in de ban van Essentiel Antwerp. Een merk dat zich de afgelopen jaren enorm in de kijker heeft gewerkt. Ik ben fan van hun sinds ze voor wat meer strakkere ontwerpen gaan en de franjes achterwege hebben gelaten. Bovendien kan je niet ontkennen dat hun tricot en wol van zalige kwaliteit is . Daarbij komt dat, unlike andere Belgische ontwerpers, hun lijn nog zeer betaalbaar is en tijdens de soldenmaanden vallen er vaak leuke dingen te rapen. Verder hebben ze Outletstores verspreid over heel Vlaanderen waar je permanent op koopjes mag jagen. 


More and more Belgian 'it-girls' are wearing Essentiel Antwerp. A Belgian brand that has put itself in the spotlight the last couple of years. I'm a fan after they made their line more tight: still bright colors, but less fringes. Unlike a lot of other Belgian designers, they are not as pricey. They also have outlet-stores in different cities where you can buy their collections at an even more acceptable price.

En om dit blogbericht nóg wat langer te maken: het eerste waar ik dacht bij het zien van deze collectie was dit IKEA-zeteltje. Ik heb je al verteld dat ik een absolute white-fan ben, vooral omdat gekleurde decoratie en accessoires dan het best tot hun recht komen. 

This little chair from IKEA was the first thing that popped into my mind after looking at Essentiel's lookbook. I already told you I'm an absolute fan of white interiors, especially because it's the best way to make colorful accessories and decoration to pop out.

I love Tasty Bowling!

Wederom neem ik jullie mee naar één van mijn favoriete stekjes in hartje Hasselt. Als je de hele dag rondgekuierd hebt en zin hebt om lekker te gaan eten zonder op voorhand te moeten reserveren is Tasty Bowl een aanrader. Wel moet je net als mij natuurlijk wel een voorliefde hebben voor Thais/Japans eten. 

Again I'm taking you on a trip to one of my favorite spots in the city center of Hasselt. After a shopping day or a day at the museum you probably want to chill out at a nice restaurant. Tasty Bowl is definitely a last minute must go, because a reservation is not obligatory. Of course you need to be a Thais/Japanese food lover, as I am.

Het systeem is als volgt: je neemt een kaart als je binnenkomt, kiest een tafeltje uit, maakt je keuze en bestelt achteraan in de zaak. Zelfs bij 'full house' moet je zelden langer dan 15 minuten wachten op je bestelling. Lang tafelen doe je er zeker niet, al word je er nooit buiten gekeken - het personeel lijkt een permanente glimlach te dragen. 

The system's easy: you take a menu, pick a table, make up your mind and order in the back of the restaurant. Even when it's 'full house' you almost never have to wait longer than 15 minutes before your meal is served. That naturally means it's not a place to sit for hours, but I never had the feeling they are pushing you to round up quickly - the personnel seems to be  born with a never ending smile. 

Zeker één keer in de twee weken gaan ik en mijn liefje 'Tasty Bowlen'. Ali wisselt graag af tussen verschillende gerechten, ik zweer bij het noedelgerecht 'Padthai kip'. Ook de vegetarische loempia's gaan er traditiegetrouw aan vooraf. Voor net geen 25 euro, inclusief twee drankjes, zijn we steeds opnieuw gesteld! 

At least once in two weeks me and my boyfriend go 'Tasty Bowling'. Ali loves to switch between diches, I definitely have my favorite: Padthai chicken.  The vegetarian spring rolls are - concerning to us - an obligatory side meal. For less than 25 euros, two drinks included, our bellies are filled.

~ HAVE FUN TASTYBOWLING ~

Voor diegenen die het is opgevallen: JA, de nagels van mijn wijsvingers zijn BLAUW en niet meer rood. Mijn gel polish heeft het op deze twee nagels begeven en ik heb er niks beter op gevonden om de nagels dan maar dagelijks te matchen met mijn outfit. Vrijdag ga ik gelukkig langs bij DC Beautyshop voor een nieuw set nagels! 

Some of you might have noticed that two of my nails are BLUE, instead of red. That's because my gel polish has gone off and I'm currently polishing them with a color according to my daily outfits. Luckily my nail-appointment at DC Beautyshop is fixed this friday! 

A touch of GREEN

Iedereen die me al een tijdje kent weet dat ik deep down een alternativo ben. Mijn ideeën kunnen gezien worden als naïef, al beschrijf ik ze zelf als idealistisch. En wat is een mens zonder idealen? Ik kan uren uitweiden over sociale ongelijkheid en inburgering, maar een 'green girl' ben ik zeker ook. Vreemd vind ik het dat de mens zichzelf als eindpunt blijft zien op deze wereld, wetende dat sommige organismen er al zoveel langer zijn en er (hopelijk) waarschijnlijk nog veel langer zullen zijn. Ik ben een fervente sorteerder, doe flink het licht uit als ik de kamer verlaat en al 6 jaar lang gaat er elke maand een nobele 3.75 euro naar WWF.  Toch kan je me zeker geen 'deep ecologist' noemen, waarschijnlijk omdat ik een product ben van onze consumptiemaatschappij en mijn liefde voor mode is daar het perfecte voorbeeld van. 

Everyone who knows me for some time now, is aware of the 'alternativo' in me. Some may see my ideas as being naive, I'd like to refer to them as being idealistic. Men and women need their ideals. I can talk for hours about social inequality and migration issues but I'm surely a 'green girl' as well. I think it's so short minded to think that the world begins and ends with humankind, knowing that some organisms have been here for ages and will (hopefully) last longer than we do. I'm an avid recycler, I make sure the lights are off when I leave the room and for six years now I donate monthly a humble 3.75 euros to WWF. That doesn't mean I'm a 'deep ecologist', that's probably because I'm a product of our consumption society: my love for fashion is the perfect example. 

Een mooie link tussen fashion/design en recyclage zijn wat mij betreft de vele kringloopwinkels en fancy tweedehandswinkeltjes die ons land rijk is. Mij vind je wel vaker terug in de grote kringloopwinkel van Hasselt, al bracht ik ook al meerdere bezoekjes aan 't Spit in Leuven. Als je geen fan bent van 'op goed geluk' gaan shoppen, zijn de trendy tweedehandswinkels die ons land telt een must go. Mijn favorietjes zijn Episode en Sussies @ Antwerpen.

Toeval wil het dat mijn favoriete accessoires-kleur deze winter GROEN is. Het lijkt wel of ik aangetrokken wordt door de kleur, gezien de vele nieuwe items waarmee ik mijn collectie blijf uitbreiden. Speciaal voor jullie, ter compensatie van mijn afwezigheid van afgelopen weekend, twee outfits met een 'touch of green': twee keer exact dezelfde accessoires met het verschil tussen casual & chique. 

Coincidence or not: my favorite color for accessories this winter happens to be GREEN. I seem to be drawn to green items, since my collection has enlarged big time.
