Buy a book !

Ik ging gisteren de stad in voor de laatste kerstaankopen, op een casual woensdag. Overal was het behoorlijk rustig, behalve in De Standaard Boekhandel. De rij aan de kassa reikte haast tot aan de voordeur en bij de vraag 'mag het ingepakt worden?' zag ik overwegend instemmende hoofdbewegingen. Eerst dacht ik 'ze staan hier allemaal wellicht met een Bongo bon in hun handen', maar niets was minder waar. De Belg koopt boeken, en massaal veel boeken blijkbaar. En dat vind ik geweldig, want mijn liefde voor het betere boek is even groot als voor... let's say de statement necklace. 

I went to the city yesterday for yet another round of Christmas shopping, on a casual Wednesday. The shops were not as crowded as I expected them to be, except for the most known Flemish book shop. The line at the checkout almost reached the front door and I saw a lot of approving head nods responding the 'does it need to be gift wrapped'-question. My first thought: everyone is buying one of those gift vouchers. Not! People are buying books, and lots of them it seems. And I could not be happier, since my love for the better book is as big as... let's say the statement necklace.

Dus, voor diegenen die al een week of twee hun hoofd zitten te breken op het perfecte cadeau óf die niet weten wat ze nu het best op hun verlanglijstje zetten: een boek, inderdaad. En om het je gemakkelijk te maken, geef ik graag een lijstje met boeken die in mijn boekenkast alvast niet mogen ontbreken. 

So, for those of you who are getting nuts finding the perfect present ór who are not sure what to put on their wishlist: a book, indeed. And to give you some inspiration, here's a list of books I would love to have standing on my book shelfs. A lot of them are in Dutch, but I'm sure English translations can be found easily.
